Actually freight train hopping fatalities can be grouped into a couple of 6 main categories, and I have listed them in the order of how often I think that they happen.

(1)Homicide, Rape, and FTRA

(2)Derailment and train hopping

(3)Drug and alcohol related

(4) Exposure and train hopping

(5)Falling under the wheels and all other mechanical causes

Not all of these were train bums, but some probably were. In 1994 there were a total of 529 people killed while trespassing on railroad property. In the state of Oregon there were four trespassers killed in 1993 and 7 killed in 1994. In California in 1993 there were 98 trespassers killed, while in 1994 there were 73 killed.
